January 2020 NPD Sales Results –

Figures for video game sales in the United States for January 2020 are known and they are not good for the entire video game industry. Due to the obvious lack of compelling software, this month’s sales fell 31% of the year to just $311 million. Remember last year, Resident Evil 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3 both led the way, along with strong sellers such as New Super Mario Bros. You Deluxe at the counter. Anyone with a great interest in video games can tell you that this spring has been exceptionally slow due to the lack of blockbusters that we have become accustomed to in recent years.

The figures for video game hardware have gotten even worse! They fell 35% year on year, from $199 million the previous year to $129 million. This is to be expected as new systems such as the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X will be on store shelves later this year. Most retailers regularly lower the price of the Xbox One X by $150 (from $499 to $349), and even this does not seem to attract new buyers. Contributions for props and playing cards were $238 million, compared to $268 million in the prior year. Adding all these figures together, total sales amount to $678 million, down 26% from the $918 million of the previous year. Ow!

With previous generations of consoles, we expected a steady decline in hardware and software prices. Although the PS4 and Xbox One S were sold for only $199 on Black Friday, the steady drop in prices has been the missing link in this console cycle. In fact, there was only a permanent price adjustment for PS4 from $399 at launch to $299 today. It’s incredible considering how long the console has been on sale. One cannot help but wonder how many copies could still be sold if they could raise the price permanently to $199.

The Nintendo Switch is once again a leader in hardware sales. This is no big surprise, given the continuing popularity and relative novelty compared to competing systems. Unfortunately, the Switch was unable to exceed its enormous turnover in January 2019, with a year-on-year decline. This is partly because there is no new software this month, but also because the hybrid has been improved with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which came out a month ago.

As far as February is concerned, there don’t seem to be any big matches this month and we can expect similar results (less than last year). As tax returns begin to reach customers, this may help boost sales in late February and March, when some high-profile games such as Animal Crossing are released: New Horizons and Forever Rock.

NPD monitors physical retail sales, but also obtains the digital data directly from the publishers. But not all companies participate. For example, Nintendo will not share its first batch of digital sales and Activision Blizzard will not make its sales available to Battle.net. These charts are sorted on dollar sales, not on the number of units sold.

Sales of traced video game software fell 31% in January compared to the previous year to $311 million, according to Piscatella. This decline is due to a new release, as Kingdom Hearts III and Resident Evil 2 were both launched in January 2019, a similar month.

Drakenbal Z: Parsley

Goku emerged victorious in January, and Kakarot is one of the best-selling games in the franchise.

Drakenbal Z: Persimmon was a January best seller, Piscatella said. Drakenbal Z: Kakarot’s launch month sales were the third highest in franchise history, surpassed only by Dragon Ball : Fighter and Drakenbal Z: Budokai.

Service Call: Modern warfare

Call of Duty, on the other hand, continues to dominate sales.

The call of duty: Modern Warfare was the second best-selling product in January and remains the best-selling product in the last 12 months, Piscatella said.

Grand theft machine V

GTA V is an eternal favorite. Mapping will probably continue long after human society has disappeared from the face of the earth.

For the first time since August 2019, Grand Theft Auto V is back in the top 5 of the bestsellers, according to Piscatella. Grand Theft Auto V remains the best-selling video game in American history.

Ring installation Adventure

Nintendo didn’t release any major games in January, but word of mouth helps Ring Fit Adventure climb to the top of the charts.

Ring Fit Adventure jumped to 9th place on the bestseller list in January, Piscatella said. This is the highest rated Ring Fit adventure to date.
